3. Flexible vs Fixed MINDSET

When we BELIEVE that we ALREADY KNOW what is best or what the ‘best’ answer is …

Especially when we have INVESTED so much TIME and MONEY to get a piece of paper from a University … which unlike a SKILL-set; cannot CREATE INCOME for us straight away … regardless of the state of the  economy!

(Yes, graduates and Post-Graduate peers, I am specifically reaching out to YOU here!)

We have an MIND-set that is ALREADY FIXED.

This means that we are no longer OPEN to any other PERSPECTIVE or POSSIBILITIES.

(Medical practitioners might be amongst the worst in this regard. There is not just one solution; there are MANY and most do not require a PILL. Natural healing should be tried as a FIRST resort, not as a NO resort. Yes, you don’t make as much money … BUT its about the patients BEST INTERESTS – REMEMBER!) #RantOver! 🙂

If I asked you right now to pay 20,000 for an excellent proven and credible training course …

Your first instinct might well be to reply that “I CAN’T AFFORD it”!

That is a STATEMENT and it CLOSES the MIND.

Robert Kiyosaki teaches this, but I cannot remember him mapping it directly back to his famous “CASH FLOW QUADRANT” model.

“I can’t afford it” is a SCARCITY MIND-set. There is NOT ENOUGH ‘pie‘.

In other words, my ‘pie’ is FINITE and I can’t allocate any of it to that COST. (We will cover the relative concepts of cost and value below).

This state-of-MIND is prevalent amongst people on the ‘left-side’ of Kiyosaki’s Cash Flow Quadrant” model. These are the EMPLOYEES and SELF-EMPLOYED (specialists)!

They swop TIME for MONEY … 

There is ONLY so many hours in a day … and so their INCOME EARNING ability is MAXED-OUT at 24 hours.

Its FINITE!

The RIGHT-side of the “CASH FLOW QUADRANT” is made up of ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDED people.

They are the “B” and “I” quadrants … Business Owners and Investors.

Some think of them as the RISK-TAKERS … they are in fact the “MANAGERS of RISK”.

Compared to the Employees and Self-Employed Specialists (professionals) on the Left side … who try to “AVOID RISK”.

Rob Moore believes that “To risk NOTHING; is to risk EVERYTHING”.

In order to CREATE WEALTH or to EARN more … one has to take a calculated risk.

yes, it can go WRONG … you can loose … that is RISK. But the REWARDS are higher! Usually asymmetrically higher.

To get back to MIND-set

The RISK MANAGER mind-set rather ASKS a QUESTION, rather than making an ABSOLUTE STATEMENT …

They ask “HOW CAN I afford it?”

A question OPENS the mind and invites IN an infinite range of POSSIBILITIES for EVALUATION.

It says “YES”, before it says “NO”.

This FLEXIBLE MIND-set is aware of the fact that as the writers holds as his mantra 

“OPPORTUNITY is the MOST PERISHABLE thing!”

CLOSED mind-sets say “NO first …

and the OPPORTUNITY perishes in an instant before their eyes.

4. LEVERAGE gets US ahead #TEAM

Its said by Myron Golden that ‘Leverage MAKES UP for what is lacking in ABILITY‘.

Basically, look for SYNERGIES (if its human related) and TOOLS to use if its NOT.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS with others can bring multiplied benefits.

A simple example is INSURANCE.

IF the probability of an accidental loss is low – but if it did happen it would cost 10,000 and there are 10 such incidents a year (on average) … 

and a group of 1,000 people wanted to have a Strategic Partnership in order to share the RISK of this potential loss event befalling THEM individually.

They would probably say 3 x (10 x 10,000) = 300,000 as a possible maximum value of claims in a year.

Divide 300,000 by 1,000 = 300 each per year.

Its better to KNOW that you can MANAGE the RISK to you … for a CERTAIN COST of 300 …

than to experience the SHOCK-LOSS of the 10,000 happening to you.

In other words, if you believed that you are very LIKELY to experience the accidental loss event within a 33 year period.

Then 10,000/ 300 pa = 33.3 years

By paying your 300 pa, you will be ahead by 0.3 x 300 = 100.

That is a POSITIVE OUTCOME and should be taken.

This without factoring in any potential tax deductibility benefits … which could mean that after 33 years, you might be (300 x 0.6) = 180 x 33 = 5,940. The difference to 10,000 is 4,060 in your favour.

Another example is:

would you rather be …

100% reliant on your OWN EFFORTS to EARN your INCOME? Such as a professional does.

Or would you rather get 1% of 100 OTHERS EFFORTS?

The RISK MANAGER (Entrepreneur with the FLEXIBLE MIND-set) obviously selects the 1% of 100 others.

By doing this, you have NOT ONLY DIVERSIFIED your RISK, but you have LEVERAGED the EFFORTS of OTHERS.

Much like in the STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP concept … by spreading effort and RISK … 

YOU can CREATE a more CERTAIN OUTCOME.

Perhaps you can’t be at work for illness reasons … then your 100% EFFORT and REWARD; does not go to 0% … it theoretically goes to 99%.

This not only REMOVES RISK, it removes STRESS and it removes a NEED to swap TIME for MONEY.

It is often said that …

IF you don’t have LEVERAGE … then YOU are the LEVERAGE of somebody else’.

Business Owners leverage the ENERGY and EFFORTS of the people that they EMPLOY in a JOB.

This ENABLES business Owners to not have to be PRESENT at their business all of the TIME.

It CREATES FREE TIME!

TIME FREEDOM is the ULTIMATE FREEDOM!

5. PASSIVE vs ACTIVE income

Firstly, I do not believe that there is true PASSIVE INCOME. (Reasons will be given later).

ACTIVE INCOME, as it implies, means that you have to expend your ENERGY and EFFORTS … which are REWARDED for … but only AFTER  EACH EFFORT.

It can consist of the sub-categories of:

  • EARNED Income
  • TRANSACTIONAL Income

EARNED INCOME (from EMPLOYMENT)

Its Active Income; because if you do not do the WORK; you do not get the PAY.

“No Work; No Pay”

Achievements in the prior month are reset to “ZERO” and the counter starts yet again.

The proverbial “Hamster Wheel” or “RAT RACE” – you get NOWHERE in terms of BUILDING WEALTH.

EFFORT has to be constantly REPEATED in order to be REWARDED with EARNED INCOME.

There is NO RESIDUAL component, unless you include company SHARE OPTION awards.

EARNINGS are LIMITED within industry pay “bands”.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to become WEALTHY working for EARNED INCOME – it is CAPPED within ‘BUDGETS”.

The only possible exceptions are the C-SUITE EXECUTIVES and the SALES team who have a variable component linked to their performance.

 

It can also be thought of as “LINEAR INCOME”... because you receive (more or less) the EXACT same PAY at the end of EACH and EVERY month.

We will talk more about this under “The Maths of Money” elsewhere in the website. The other matching topic that will accompany this is that of “EXPONENTIAL INCOME”.

As the name implies, this is where over time, 1+1 = 3 rather that 2 as it does under the concept of “LINEAR INCOME”.

TRANSACTIONAL INCOME (from TRADE)

So if I sell a food item at a farmers market, I only make a sale IF

  • I am at the market
  • the customer is there
  • the customer wants to buy
  • the customer has money
  • the customer has money with them
  • the customer can carry the goods
  • the customer actually comes back on their way out
  • etc.

The ONLY way that I can make money the following weekend is

  • if I am at the market
  • there are customers
  • I pitch a customer in an inviting and enticing manner
  • I am respectful
  • I serve and meet the customers needs
  • etc.

Once I have attracted a customer and they are happy with my products in terms of suitability, quality, packaging, hygiene, price and my service …

 

The only way that I will get another sale to them is if we are once again in the same place at the same time … with ALL of the other preconditions applying.

 

The point is that the EFFORT has to be mage OVER and OVER to new customers, as few of the same customers are likely to come to the market just for my products.

 

I would have to have a sufficient range and there would have to be other vendors with products that they want; to make it WORTHWHILE for them to make the EFFORT and spend the TIME and MONEY to come to me.

Essentially, it is a bit of LUCK to get a repeat sale.

In addition, because I have CONSUMABLE food items for sale, once they have been eaten; I would need to resupply with a PHYSICAL product.

Thus, EVERY SALE has almost an EQUAL EFFORT to achieve the INCOME.

Thus, it is IRREGULAR and it is UNCERTAIN.

And it must be REPEATED every single DAY or WEEKEND.

PASSIVE INCOME implies that you DO NOTHING … that the income flows like water, electricity or data … without any effort!

The truth is that there is an  INITIAL EFFORT that THEN facilitates and leverages this effort with a monthly RECURRING income.

Let’s call that “PIPELINE INCOME“… as I heard Toby Mathis call it.

After an initial effort and or investment … then a ‘rental’ comes in … for the USE of this infrastructure or what it DELIVERS

  • Water (Litres)
  • Electricity (KiloWatts)
  • data connectivity (MegaBytes)

 

It can be thought of as a NETWORK.

  • Water pipeline
  • electricity grid
  • Telecoms network

Take a Telecoms Network … once a customer is acquired, they are activated to USE the NETWORK and they PAY for that.

Due to the nature of the product, there is customer CONTINUITY OF USE  every month.

So there are not the same REPEATABILITY and UNCERTAINTY caused by the IRREGULAR sales issues of TRANSACTIONAL income.

 
The other great benefit of CREATING a NETWORK business is not just the REGULAR and CERTAIN monthly SUBSCRIPTION sales.
 
Its that you have no CUSTOMER ACQUISITION COST and EFFORTS.
 
You may have RETENTION COSTS …
 

6. What is the PURPOSE of MONEY?

We all know that there is a DIFFERENCE between the RICH, the MIDDLE-CLASS and the POOR.

Well in FINANCIAL terms anyway.

But, that’s NOT the REASON

its a MIND-set issue.

 

The POOR

They think that the PRIMARY PURPOSE of money is …

To PAY BILLS!

So, their LIFE and SPENDING is structured around that.

 

The MIDDLE-CLASS

They think that the PRIMARY PURPOSE of money is …

To PAY BILLS – ON TIME!

To ACCESS more CREDIT facilities.

Their LIFE and SPENDING is structured around that.

 

The RICH

They think that the PRIMARY PURPOSE of money is …

To MAKE MORE MONEY!

Their LIFE and SPENDING is structured around that.

 

This means that …

The POOR and MIDDLE-CLASS are CONTROLLED by a CONSUMPTION MIND-set

Whereas the RICH CULTIVATE an INVESTMENT MIND-set!

 

The REASON that the WEALTHY are in the position that they are …

Is their MIND-set of, DISCIPLINE, CONSISTENCY and HABIT’S of:

  • BUDGETING
  • Delayed GRATIFICATION
  • PAY THEMSELVES 1st
  • INVEST some of their INCOME
  • INVEST in INCOME generating ASSETS
  • DIVERSIFICATION
  • RISK-MANAGEMENT
  • LEVERAGE
  • STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS
  • SUBSCRIPTION INCOME
  • PASSIVE/ PIPELINE INCOME
  • INVESTING FOR INCOME, not growth
  • Not being ruled by FEAR
  • Not selling INCOME PRODUCING ASSETS
